In light of our short-term development goals especially respecting digital music, pay TV and Internet TV, I am proposing a general outline or idea for a portable device that could serve as a personal data hub for DMP DM. I first thought of it as a "portable convergence device" that could serve as either a PC peripheral or a standalone handheld. It should be noted that it would also be a personal data storage and data server device.

FORM FACTOR
no bigger than a paperback book

MEMORY STORAGE CAPACITY
5-100 GB

MODULAR SIDE SLOT
accepts adaptor-drives for alternative media formats such as conceivably a floppy drive, Memory Stick or removable hard-drive

DIGITAL OUTPUT & ANALOG HOLE STRATEGY
output should be easily connectable with any major display device's format and input-specifications, for example HDTV; although the device can produce high quality digital audio/video output (with a modular adaptor for different formats of cable and plug), when it produces hi-out it does so with a device-specific watermark identifying the unique IED that produced it

DIGITAL INPUTS
the strength of any specific device design will lie in the readiness with which it can be adapted to take a wide set of cable and plug inputs - the device should be incredibly convenient as a central repository for personal data

RUGGEDIZED OPTIONS
cushioning, standard ruggedization (inc. branded models with colorful "skins") and ergonomic water-pack add-ons could be available (for laptop use or in a wearable fannypak)

ENCRYPTION SYNCHRONISATION WITH INTERNATIONAL RANDOMIZER
when connectivity with the Internet is availale and present, an international randomizer service will take the output of the relied upon atomic clock and "broadcast" a data signal combining a random sequence of numbers with digital timecode, so that information can be bound in an encryption friendly state in conjunction with a unique sequence of random numbers, for example the use case of a kiosk at which a handheld would download 20 GB of entertainment goods so that this data could be watermarked to the exact transaction time and the complete transaction could be persistently documented (at least at the file level)

PC PERIPHERAL CAPABILITY
could be used as data storage device for personal collection of files, e.g., MP3 or Divx, also could be used like a dongle to deliver high quality IED-watermarked streams for viewing/listening.

P2P CAPABILITY
as a unique user (note unique IP address issue), the multipurpose IED could solicit DMP DRM-governed media files over P2P and also publish them, all within a DMP-specific secure connection, for example DTCP-friendly

HOME NETWORK / BROADCAST FLAG FRIENDLY
the obligation to prevent unlimited Internet redistribution would be met by this device in two ways, primarily by providing friendly storage and being a data server for DM files/bitstreams, but also by IED-watermarking high-quality output (ref. ANALOG HOLE STRATEGY above)

Specifically I believe such a device would satisfy what we are looking for as follows:

Digital music -
the multipurpose IED could be connectable over TCP/IP with a standard web server running authentication protocols and so could interact with any major content service as the primary storage drive/location;
the multipurpose IED would work as a portable music player and could be modified to accept a standard CD input (note that personal copies could be made ripping CD-to-IED but not allowing the compressed file to leave the device as a digital file)

Pay TV -
the multipurpose IED could receive input that was triggered by almost any transaction, for example a phone call or a web-based request, the input could subsequently be stored and consumed by being served from the device (since it is also a personal data server)

Internet TV -
it should not be difficult to produce (and encode) standard television shows in a format that could only be consumed by an individual having a multpurpose IED, so the IED would enable secure personal TV delivery, interactively requested and consumed anytime

Also note that the proposed multipurpose IED meets the identified need to explore digital music DMBMs and the P2P DEU.
